Sounds like an over height truck has collected "Bald Head's Bridge" on SH1 by Marton and then another truck has hit the debris causing a huge fire.

No trains for several days and fibre optic cables burnt out too.

Someone is going to be in a pile off excrement.

Remind me to tell you about the guy that took out the overhead fibers down here last year - when I have more time.
"Its was a good crash" said the truck driver on TV 3 .??
I remember having a near miss going through there towing the race car on a big trailer. Truck coming the other way with unladen trailer going too fast crossed the centre line with the back of the trailer starting to hang out. Tosser! Nearly took us all out. It's real tight getting under that bridge and it's narrow. Fine if everyone does the right thing but dodgy if not! Sounds like a lot of NZ roads!

Found time for the story yet Uncle?
Ahh yes......... here goes - this is as told to me and may or may not be 100% accurate

Well - the guy who owns the silver Anglia I have been working on dissapeared mid project for or a couple of days late last year. His job is fixing Telstra cables.

Seems a truck driver and his boss were doing a perk job and had to pick up a tank from the Wellington port - no one had organised any over height permits or much more detail so the driver rocks down to the port and announces that he is there to collect a tank.

The port guys go - yeah - there it is and they load up a bloody great big battle tank onto the truck. Cool thinks the truckie - this is a new one. The 'packing slip' on the tank advise that it is going to Wiauru Army Museum so off said trucker heads - about an hour and a bit up the country his boss phones and say "WTF R U we are waiting for the tank - it has to be buried today"

Some scratching of heads an a fair bit of confusion later it dawns on both driver and boss that they have colllected entirely the wrong tank! Suck. He has to head back into Wellington and four and a bit hours late they load uo a giant water(?) tank onto the truck.

The destination is somewhere past the Wellington suburb of Kandalah but the rush caused further innattention and the over height tank tore through an overhead fibre optic cable.

The imapct was so great that 160 meters of UNDERGROUND fibre optic cable was destroyed as well as the visible damage to the overhead wire.

It took almost two days to repair (which of course is where my mate disappeared to) and the repair cost alone was estimated to be $120k - plus any comeback from the affected Telstra customers.

The truckie was having a really bad day - as the indications were when I heard the story that he would be invoiced for the repair bill.

excrement thats no good, I hope I've got indemnity if I cause huge damage, shorely his insurance or the companies insurance will bail him out.

Has that road opened up near waikanae UJ?

I don't know - it wasn't supposed to be closed as far as I can tell but the contractors effectively had it shut down - much to everyone's disgust.

The lahar made a few dents in people's travel plans yesterday too I bet.

Are you on your way down to collect the Saab?

I don't know what the outcome was - but given that it was allegedly a cash job and they didn't get overherght permits or travel on an approved route I would imagine an argument for negligence could be made.

I have public liabiliy insurance of $1m but I really have no idea on what they would or would not cover. It was a case of having to have it to work rather than researching the best cover.

I would have thought I was a low risk as to break something one needs to be doing something - and I just spend all day on Motorauction.co.nz
