HUGE CROWD WITNESSES ANOTHER GREAT DAY IN TERETONGA PARK'S HISTORY
Daniel Gaunt won the New Zealand Grand Prix while Australian David Besnard took out the Parker ENZED NZV8s Championship honours in a hugely successful event at Teretonga Park this weekend.
The circuit hosted the Mike Pero Mortgages Motorsport Series in it's 50th Anniversary year with a massive crowd estimated to be of record proportions in attendance. Crowd estimates have ranged from 13,000 to 20,000 and it may be a day or two before final figures are known.
Daniel Gaunt of the A1 Team.NZL Junior Development Team capped off his weekend with a very comfortable win in the New Zealand Grand Prix held late this afternoon.
Gaunt, of Auckland, won by 4.873 seconds from Matthew Hamilton of Christchurch with Auckland's Daynom Templeman third. Several of the fancied runners struck problems in the race with David Besnard, Ben Harford, Andy Knight, Shane Van Gisbergen and Kenny Smith all visiting the pits during the race.
Gaunt also won the Spirit Of A Nation Cup race on Saturday while Ben Harford interrupted his winning streak by taking the victory in this morning's 10 - lap race for the Toyota Racing Series cars.
The crowds love the Parker ENZED NZV8s Championship and the competitors provided three excellent races this weekend. Kayne Scott of Hamilton took the first race on Saturday in his Commodore from another Holden driver, Aucklander Andy Booth. Ford honours were upheld as Angus Fogg made a late charge into third. In Sunday morning's race a major incident at the first corner saw several cars eliminated, requiring the race to be restarted. When the race resumed the first six cars worked their way into a nose to tail battle until Angus Fogg and Paul Manuell made contact on the penultimate lap. In possibly the best finish of the series John McIntyre charged to the lead in his Ford Falcon on the front straight on the final lap to just beat Besnard with Scott third. The final 20 lap reverse grid race was won by Besnard from John Penny and Paul Manuell.
Besnard's results gave him the overall honours for the round in his Ford.
Kiwi international Craig Baird won all three Battery Town Porsche GT3 Cup races while fellow frontrunner Fabian Coulthard had a troubled weekend. Graeme Cameron of Auckland, Australian Klark Quinn, Jody Vincent of Pukekohe and Jono Lester of Taupo took out the minor placings behind Baird.
MINI Challenge qualifying on Saturday was ultra - close with the first twelve cars all within one second of each other. Anthony Pedersen won Saturday afternoon's race after South Canterbury driver Brent Collins selected the wrong gear whilst leading. Pole - sitter Kevin Cantwell was second after a slow start while Collins recovered for third. Aucklander Gavin Dawson led all the way in Sunday morning's race before Pedersen of Rotorua won the final race this afternoon from Dawson and championship leader Eddie Bell to wrap up the round.
Championship leader Dale Williams of Auckland won all three KPMG Production Racing Series races in his Mitsubishi EVO 9 with Simon Sceats in a Subaru WRX the runner - up on each occasion.
Michael Burdett won the first two MTA Formula Ford Championship races before Dunedin driver John Whelan took the third.
Dean McMillan of Napier won two of the three First Windows & Doors NZV8s Development Series races in his Holden Commodore while last year's champion Alan McCarrison of Penrose won the other, on Sunday morning in his Ford Falcon.
The huge crowd provided a great atmosphere with many camping at the circuit for the weekend. Many put a great deal of effort into their viewing facilities. The quality event allied to the massive crowd will make this a memorable event in Teretonga's proud history.
